Art's First Steps: Preschool Outreach Programs

Call 215.340.9800 ext 169 or email splumb@michenerartmuseum.org with questions about the Art's First Steps Program.

The Michener offers many preschool and parent-toddler classes where even the youngest child can become an artist.

The mission of the Art's First Steps program is to prepare preschool students for life-long learning in the arts and to insure accessibility to the rich cultural heritage of his/her communities. A trained museum educator/artist will visit your school and provide an hour of stimulating art instruction based on the theme and medium of your choice. Using a variety of different art materials and techniques, students will delight in learning about painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and more. The Michener Art Museum will supply all the necessary (non-toxic) art materials. A very special feature of this program is a class visit to the Michener Art Museum where students will have the opportunity to interact with original works of art and experience first-hand learning in an art museum environment.

What is the maximum number of students that can participate at any one time in Art's First Steps? 25 students is the maximum (10 is the minimum) number of students per class. We ask that the school provide one volunteer per six students to help students accomplish their goals.

Do we need to be present and to assist with the program? It is required by the Michener Art Museum for schools participating in the A.F.S. program to have regularly scheduled staff present at all times during the art instruction, not only for the comfort of the students, but to help reinforce instruction and generally help to see that the program runs smoothly.

Is this program suitable for students with disabilities? A.F.S. can be designed to meet the requirements of all types of students, including students with special needs.

Is there any advantage registering in the program for one year or more? If you register for a year-long program, you will be eligible for our yearly discounted rates. We can design an A.F.S. program to meet all of your needs. A.F.S. can be worked into your school curriculum or used as an extra-curricular art enrichment activity.

When can we register for Art's First Steps? Teachers can register for A.F.S. at any time during the year. However, we require at least four weeks notice prior to the date your would like the program to begin.

What is the cost of the Art's First Steps Program? Schools work with the Museum's Education Department to plan an A.F.S. Program that suits their needs. Some schools have one lesson a year, some have two and some combine on-site lessons with Museum visits for a dynamic year-long program. Fees for your individualized lessons are established after we finalize the planning of your Art's First Steps program.
